Otter Totem

                        Jan. 20th - Feb. 18th

If you are born during this period, you are in the Rest and Cleansing

Moon, and the Otter is your totem. Totem animals come to us from

ancient and modern native cultures.  Animals are messengers,

teachers and guides.  Their lessons bring us great wisdom if we have

the stillness to hear, and the eyes to see.  Ancient native americans

believed that all animals had lessons to teach and had  healing or

inspirational powers.  When they held or carried a certain fetish, or

meditated on its meaning, they believed they drew the special energy

of the animal to themselves.  Today in a search for a closer walk with

the earth, many are relearning the old ways of these ancient ones,

using the animal energy as the native americans did.  Your life long

animal totem works with you throughout your entire life.  Always there

when you need its powers.   Always reminding you of your power.

Your life totem is always there for you and reflects your inner

  spiritual nature.

Otter Energy

The otter is a feminine totem.   Feminine energy is deeply aware of and

in tune with cycles.  Natural cycles of life that are welcomed with

reverence.  Crisis is best handled with this energy, and crisis is followed

by rebirth.  The otters fur and pelts have been used by medicine men to

hold their medicine tools.   Otter medicine takes great pleasure in the

success and happiness of others, and the otter will work very hard to help

others achieve that.  There is no selfishness, the otter could never be mean

or self-centered .  The purpose of the otter is to support others not them-

selves.  If an otter comes into your life that could be a sign that you need

to take more time for yourself to just play and have fun.  You must feed

the otters playful side, so that she can continue to help keep you balanced.

We forget sometimes of our own spirits need to laugh, have fun and to be

Child like.  This is a very important step to walking in balance.  From

otter, you can learn to be playful, nurturing, prophetic, noble, curious,

and humanitarian in nature.   To choose which animal energies are

right for you, simply take a deep breath, still yourself and ask your inner

being.  You will have a knowing as the Ancient ones did long ago.
